GLP-1 drugs and peptides in Australia

In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) decides which medicines can be sold. Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are approved. Pharmacists have not been allowed to make their own copies of GLP-1 drugs since 1 October 2024. Most "peptides" sold online, like BPC-157, are not approved, and the TGA is now acting against people who import, sell or advertise them. Ads for prescription medicines, including weight-loss injections, are banned.

GLP-1 medicines

Approved products (ARTG entry dates): Victoza 26 Aug 2010; Trulicity 19 Jan 2015; Saxenda 24 Dec 2015; Ozempic 28 Aug 2019; Rybelsus 7 Feb 2022; Wegovy 1 Sep 2022 (adolescent use from 29 Feb 2024); Mounjaro 23 Dec 2022 (type 2 diabetes) and 10 Sep 2024 (weight management). Generic liraglutide pens entered the ARTG on 12 Mar 2025. Orforglipron is under TGA evaluation (accepted Jan 2026). Extra Mounjaro and Ozempic uses are also under evaluation. Compounding: since 1 Oct 2024 pharmacists must not compound GLP-1 receptor agonist analogues. Funding: PBS lists semaglutide injection (Ozempic) and dulaglutide for type 2 diabetes. PBAC recommended Wegovy for established cardiovascular disease with obesity in Nov 2025, but the PBS record as at 1 Sep 2026 shows the listing had not occurred; Novo Nordisk has lodged a revised proposal (established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with a BMI of 35 or more) for the November 2026 PBAC meeting. PBAC recommended Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes in Mar 2026, but the sponsor advised it is not proceeding. PBAC's Nov 2025 advice on obesity priority groups favours a slow, managed roll-out. Enforcement: TGA infringement notices to telehealth businesses for advertising weight-loss medicines (July 2024, February 2026), and Ahpra's Sept 2026 warning about unsafe prescribing of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.

Peptides

Unapproved peptides are unapproved therapeutic goods: not on the ARTG, not assessed by the TGA. Importing, advertising, manufacturing, supplying and exporting them is unlawful unless an exemption applies, and TGA states influencers, affiliates and online sellers may be held accountable. Scheduling: BPC-157 has been Schedule 4 and Appendix D clause 5 (possession without authority illegal) since 1 Jun 2024. TB500, thymosin beta 4, CJC-1295, AOD9604, ipamorelin, growth hormone releasing peptides and secretagogues are also in Appendix D clause 5; sermorelin and Melanotan II are named in Schedule 4 only, but sermorelin is a GHRH analogue and the Appendix D clause 5 entry covers GHRHs "including those separately specified in Schedule 4", so the possession control may also apply to it. Many others (for example KPV, MOTS-c, semax, selank, epitalon, kisspeptin, DSIP, LL-37) are not named in the Poisons Standard and have no ARTG product. GHK-Cu is not named either, but Schedule 4 covers copper compounds for human use (with exceptions for low-copper preparations). Compounding: individual-patient compounding is exempt from ARTG inclusion, but pharmacists and doctors must meet manufacturing-licence exemption rules, and the exemption does not cover GLP-1 receptor agonist analogues. Import: the Personal Importation Scheme requires clear labelling, and for prescription-only goods a valid Australian prescription or written authority; the TGA will not release unmarked or code-only vials. Enforcement timeline 2026: 26 Mar to 17 Apr ABF-led operation with the TGA and Victoria Police seizing steroids and peptide products worth over $2 million, with three people charged with importing performance and image enhancing drugs (further charges announced 13 Aug); 13 Apr safety advisory naming BPC-157, GHK-Cu, TB-500, retatrutide and CJC-1295; 10 Jun peptides added as a compliance priority; 19 Jun joint TGA and Chief Medical Officer warning; 20 Jul notice to promoters; 17 Aug seizure of over $120,000 of peptides and steroids in NSW; 14 Sep alert that a product sold as retatrutide contained semaglutide; 28 Sep Federal Court proceedings over alleged peptide advertising; 21 May and 17 Aug actions on Melanotan II. Sport: Sport Integrity Australia lists BPC-157 as a non-approved (S0) example and sermorelin and ipamorelin as banned peptide hormones (S2); athletes should confirm any substance with them.

Advertising rules

Advertising prescription-only medicines to the public is prohibited under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, except in very limited circumstances. TGA guidance published 18 Jun 2026 says direct or indirect references count: terms such as "weight loss injection", images of an injection pen, business names that point to a medicine, and telehealth pages that present a service as a way to obtain a specific prescription medicine can all be unlawful advertising. Unapproved goods generally cannot be advertised to the public, and advertising of compounded medicines is restricted. Health services that involve therapeutic goods are also regulated by the TGA and by Ahpra advertising rules. Penalties: civil penalties up to $1.82 million per breach for individuals and $18.2 million for corporations, criminal penalties up to 7 years imprisonment, plus infringement notices. Enforcement examples: 21 notices totalling $319,260 to 4 businesses and 3 individuals, including telehealth clinics (July 2024); Prime Medic notices for advertising Ozempic and Mounjaro (paid January 2026); Federal Court action over alleged peptide advertising (September 2026).

For experts

The regulatory detail

Therapeutic goods must be on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before they are supplied, unless an exemption applies. Scheduling under the Poisons Standard (June 2026 edition) is given legal effect by state and territory law; semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide, dulaglutide and exenatide are Schedule 4. Compounded medicines are unapproved goods that may be supplied for an individual patient on a prescription or request, but from 1 October 2024 pharmacists must not compound GLP-1 receptor agonist analogues. The Personal Importation Scheme allows import of unapproved goods for personal or immediate-family use, but prescription-only goods need a valid Australian prescription and unlabelled or unclear vials are not released. Public subsidy runs through PBAC and the PBS: the PBS records seen on 29 September 2026 show no listing of a GLP-1 for obesity; PBAC recommended Wegovy for people with established cardiovascular disease and obesity in November 2025 (a revised proposal is on the November 2026 PBAC agenda), and the Mounjaro type 2 diabetes listing has stalled because the sponsor is not proceeding. Since June 2026 unapproved peptides are a TGA compliance priority, with seizures, criminal import charges, infringement notices and Federal Court proceedings reported between April and September 2026, and Ahpra issued new prescriber guidance on 16 September 2026.

Australia's PBAC publishes advice on subsidising GLP-1 obesity treatments

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee published its November 2025 outcome on 19 December 2025. It advised a slow, managed roll-out to priority groups such as people with established cardiovascular disease, and separately recommended listing Wegovy on the PBS for people with established cardiovascular disease and obesity.

  2. 2024-05-22

Australia announces a ban on compounded GLP-1 medicines, effective 1 October 2024

Health Minister Mark Butler announced on 22 May 2024 that compounded copies of GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic and Mounjaro would be removed from the pharmacy compounding exemption from 1 October 2024. The Minister said at least 20,000 Australians were using such products at the time.
