What to eat on GLP-1 medications
Smaller meals, protein-forward, knowing which foods tend to land well and which ones don't. The good news: there is no GLP-1 diet. The better news: you can predict most of the friction.
Build your plate
Lead with protein. Lean fish, eggs, lean meats, tofu, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and protein powders are all reliable. Aim for 25-40 grams per meal if you can tolerate it; if you can't, smaller frequent doses add up.
After protein, add non-starchy vegetables — cooked, lightly seasoned. They are generally well tolerated and provide micronutrients and fiber. Then a small portion of slow carbs (oats, whole grains, beans, sweet potato) if your appetite allows.
Foods most patients tolerate well
- Plain rice, oatmeal, congee
- Broth-based soups
- Plain Greek yogurt
- Bananas, applesauce, kiwis
- Eggs (scrambled, poached, boiled)
- Crackers, toast, plain noodles
- Lean fish (salmon, cod, tilapia)
- Cottage cheese
- Ginger tea, peppermint tea
Foods that tend to land rough
- Fried foods, fatty fast food
- Very large portions of anything
- Sweet drinks (juice, soda, sweetened coffee drinks)
- Heavy desserts
- Alcohol — many people lose tolerance dramatically
- Very spicy or very acidic foods (varies by person)
- Cream sauces and rich gravies
- Carbonated drinks (bloating)
Hydration
With smaller meals, water intake often drops without you noticing. Set reminders for the first month. Electrolyte mixes (low- or no-sugar) help if you find yourself feeling flat, lightheaded, or unusually fatigued.
Alcohol
A widely-reported pattern is that alcohol tolerance drops sharply on GLP-1 medications, and the unwanted hangover-like effects appear at lower doses than you are used to. Many patients report that the desire to drink also fades. There is no medical advice here other than: be cautious, especially in the first months and after step-ups.
If your appetite is gone
Even when you are not hungry, hitting a protein floor protects your lean muscle during weight loss. Liquid protein (shakes, Greek yogurt smoothies, broth-based high-protein soups) is the fallback when chewing feels like too much.
The dietitian conversation
For most people, a session or two with a registered dietitian who has GLP-1 experience is one of the best per-dollar investments early in treatment. They can help you plan around lower appetite without compromising nutrition.
