National Medical Products Administration (NMPA)
Is Tirzepatide legal in China?
The regulator has approved it as a medicine.
Tirzepatide is marketed by Lilly in China, with both an imported and a localised product on sale according to a 2026-08-08 company filing. That filing, which reports the first domestic generic application, lists the reference product's indications as type 2 diabetes, long-term weight management in adults (BMI 28 or more, or 24 or more with a related condition) and moderate-to-severe sleep apnoea with obesity. The 2025 national insurance list, effective 2026-01-01, lists tirzepatide for adults with type 2 diabetes only, and Lilly's second-quarter 2026 report notes the addition of Mounjaro to China's NRDL in the first quarter of 2026. No compounding channel exists.
