Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
Is Semaglutide legal in United Kingdom?
The regulator has approved it as a medicine.
The MHRA lists semaglutide as licensed in the UK. Ozempic and Rybelsus are licensed for type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy for weight management and for lowering the risk of serious heart problems in people with obesity or overweight. In April 2026 the MHRA approved a single-dose pen at the highest weekly strength for adults with obesity. On 11 June 2026 the MHRA approved a Wegovy tablet for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 to 30 with a weight-related condition; it was not available on the NHS when approved. On 3 July 2026 Wegovy also received a conditional licence for liver disease (MASH) with moderate to advanced scarring; NICE is still appraising it for this use, so it is not yet available on the NHS for MASH. It is prescription-only. NICE (TA875) recommends the Wegovy injection on the NHS only through specialist weight management services for up to two years.
