Is Semaglutide legal in India?

CDSCO approved Wegovy for chronic weight management in adults on 20 April 2022. Novo Nordisk has held an import and marketing permission for semaglutide since at least 2020, and its semaglutide injection for type 2 diabetes has been approved since September 2025, according to expert-committee records. Novo Nordisk's core Indian patent expired in March 2026 and several Indian companies (reported: Dr Reddy's, Zydus, Alkem, Sun Pharma, Glenmark) launched generic semaglutide from about 21 March 2026; CDSCO's expert committee has been clearing synthetic-origin versions company by company, including for weight management in May 2026. Sale is by retail on prescription from specialists (endocrinologists and internal medicine specialists; some indications also cardiologists). In March 2026 CDSCO began an enforcement drive over illegal sales and surrogate advertising, and in July 2026 a counterfeit-semaglutide alert was reported.
