Is Semaglutide legal in China?

Novo Nordisk's originator semaglutide injection is on the market in China, and the 2025 national insurance list (from 2026-01-01) covers it only for type 2 diabetes. Novo Nordisk's weight-management brand (Wegovy) is also sold: its price per pen roughly halved in late 2025, and a Chinese developer used it as the comparator in a phase 3 weight trial. On 2026-09-08 a listed developer stated that, per NMPA's website, no domestically made semaglutide is approved, and CDE's public register shows many domestic applications, including a weight-management application accepted on 2026-07-02 and a new import marketing application for semaglutide tablets accepted on 2026-08-27. Novo Nordisk's semaglutide tablets already have post-approval supplementary filings in the register (from 2024), which points to an approved tablet product. The compound patent was reported to expire on 2026-03-20. There is no pharmacy compounding route in China.
