Medsafe (New Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority, Ministry of Health)

Is Liraglutide legal in New Zealand?

ApprovedVictoza and Saxenda approved; three generics have consent but are not marketed; Victoza funded for type 2 diabetes

The regulator has approved it as a medicine.

Medsafe lists Victoza (first approved 24 June 2010, for type 2 diabetes and reducing cardiovascular events) and Saxenda (first approved 10 March 2016, for weight management) as having consent. Three generic weight-management liraglutide products, Benedo, Liraglutide RBX and Liraglutide SUN, received consent in August 2025 (the RBX and SUN data sheets give 15 August 2025), but Medsafe's product records list all three as 'not available', meaning the sponsor has told Medsafe it does not market or supply them. Three further generic liraglutide applications were still being evaluated in September 2026. Pharmac funds the Victoza pen for people with type 2 diabetes who meet its Special Authority criteria, according to the October 2026 Pharmaceutical Schedule. No liraglutide for weight management is listed as funded there. Liraglutide is a prescription medicine.
